The purpose of this blog is to keep all of us in touch with each other, post what's happening in our lives, share a funny picture, or publish anything else you want. It'll be like Spieg's class all over again, except for you'll want to write in it! We started this way back in 2010 after graduation. Remember that time? We're so OLD now!
Now here's a funny picture for you to look at:

One of my students told me to fuck off today. To my face. Only he said it in Polish, so was obviously not expecting me to understand him. I'm not sure if I'm more disturbed by the fact that he said that or by the fact that everyone else in the class laughed when he said it...as if showing such disrespect to a teacher is a good thing. Uggggh how do public school teachers EVER survive?!? I have so much more respect for my past teachers now!!

wow! what a little asshole, and the class too!!!
ReplyDeleteteachers have just a handful of terrible days like this right....but when students actually learn stuff you'll feel your time was worth something.
can you teach me how to say that so i can use someday.
that is crazy amanda. totally crazy. and shitty. i have a super good public teacher story that i will share with you if you ever right me a letter. did you say anything to the kid btw?
ReplyDeleteGrrr I wrote a post yesterday but apparently it didn't take....
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how much one or two classes can bring a person down. I have 29 teaching hours a week (full-time is considered 26), and yet I cried every single day last week cause of these two classes that were causing me trouble (and especially after I was told to fuck off.)
I most definitely did say something to the kid. It went something like this: "WHAT did you say?" "Nothing" "I know what that means" "You do?!?" "Yes, I do. Never say that in my class ever again." Then, the awkward silence that follows. I didn't want to lose my cool, even though I really wanted to scream at him. Grr.
Unfortunately, I can't ever remember the first syllable of this three-syllable phrase, so I can't teach you properly, Patrice :( However, you might get a kick out of knowing another great Polish cuss phrase: Kurwa (or in English spelling, kurva.) It literally means prostitute, but Poles say it for EVERYTHING (crap, oh man, you bitch, I forgot, etc.) But to me, I always hear them say "prostitute" so it's like a bunch of people are walking around, randomly going "Oh PROSTITUTE I just stepped in a hole" or "Prostitute, this coffee sucks." LOVE it :)
On a lighter note, the day after I had the "fuck off" incident, a couple women in one of my adult classes went out of the way to tell me how much they love my classes and how much they love me as a teacher. So, that was really nice to hear :) Something I definitely needed!!
PS Rach my letter should be reaching you soon (I hope!!!) Let me know when you get it :)
yay i am SO looking forward to your letter
ReplyDeletefuck that kid
and im sorry your classes shittiness made you cry!
i get worked up about my students now too, which is weird cuz when i taught before i just thought about the money. but their recital is this thursday! (omg soooo nervous) and the stupid fuckers are trying to kill me. they keep "forgetting" which song to practice. or lying and saying they did (i am not deaf. despite what the som at dpu thinks). which pisses me off - does that make you mad? when they're like "I STUDIED!" and you're like "um clearly you fucking failed had you STUDIED this wouldn't have happened?" and they forget their music and to show up and say "i can't practice sat or sun, i have a soccer game" me "does the soccer game take ALL DAY? HUH? DOES IT? 18 HOUR SOCCER GAME?!" i am a psycho. you would NOT want to be my student. at least your break is soon amanda! just hold on!
i forgot to add that that "prostitute" thing is hilarious. but i guess some people might see our "poop! i stubbed my toe" odd as well. poop being shit, btw
